It’s not about the nail
For most guys, life’s little bumps seem easy… give us an issue, complaint, or obstacle and most of us will quickly change into “solution man“.
I’ve noticed that most guys can come up with a solution to just about any dilemma, and for some reason, most gals don’t always want that as you can see in this classic ‘That Guy’ video.
Be the Hammer?
What if we applied our solution generating powers to our own personal lives and fitness situations?
What if we looked at ourselves with the detached, objective perspective and analysis we have when solving problems for others?
Then, what if we actually listened to our internal hammer/self assessment and took the necessary steps to pound out our own individual “nails”.
It’s Hamemrtime!
Today, let’s take one of the most common 40ish nails and throw down a sledgehammer analysis and solution.
The most common ‘nails’ I see and hear revolve around a very common issue – motivation and accountability.
- Still pursuing your New Year’s resolution? Or has that been long forgotten?
- Still starting that workout NEXT Monday? Even when you said the same thing last week, and the week before, and…
- Still skipping Wednesday because you don’t like leg day? Missing Friday because poker on Thursday makes you ‘tired?’
- Still eating and drinking like you’re 18 and wondering why your 40ish belly won’t go away?
Simple solution. You are the nail. No motivation, No accountability. Fix it quick with what we would call, in the corporate world, a ‘measurable’ result on your SMART goals (yes, I just wasted untold hours on reviews on people who are ultimately their own nail).
How do I nail out this solution you ask? Get some accountability and a daily reality check.
Nail, meet Hammer!
My guess is you don’t have a workout partner… get one! If you have one and you still have these issues, remind them of their roles and responsibilities. If they don’t start performing, fire and replace them.
When you find one, make sure it is a guy who is not afraid to speak up and hold you accountable for your specific fitness goals. Too often, we men look in the mirror and think, “damn right… I look good”. Most times that is far from the truth. Try taking a picture, no, not a selfie… a let your gut out, shirtless, realistic image – cover your face if you have to so you can be objective. You will probably be shocked…
Do yourself a favor. Outline your personal fitness goals with specific target dates attached. Next find a workout partner who is not afraid to quickly identify your ‘nail’ and speak up when we otherwise can’t see it ourselves. Otherwise, you might as well be ‘That Woman’ in the video – you little B****!
It is only through that partnership that true accountability and change happens for most 40-ish guys. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather be ‘that guy’ with someone pointing out the large nail in my forehead than continue to have a headache… and a fat belly, fat boy.
Sincerely,
That Guy
