New Year’s Resolution

December 1, 2015 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions?

New Years ResolutionIf so, can you believe you only have one month to figure out what they should be.

Then again, if you are like me… You already know, don’t you? I will admit it. My primary one is:

Lose Weight. Again…

Rather than come up with some elaborate plan that makes me post 8 bajillion things on here that neither you or I care about reading and that just stress me out, I am going to go with one post a day for the next 30 days.

Just simply my thoughts and keeping myself focused so I don’t gain any more weight over the month of December.

And somewhere along the line I will come up with my actual resolutions.

I will keep a simple list of my progress here so feel free to look at the, comment, offer suggestions or advice, constructive criticism, or encouragement…

Floyd Mayweather is FAT! Manny Pacquiao is MUSCLE!

May 2, 2015 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

I woke up  this fine morning with the Floyd Mayweather – Manny Pacquiao boxing match on my brain.  Guess I watched too much of the fight leadup stuff yesterday and my subconscious was on it during my 5 hours.

It is not uncommon for me to wake up with strange thoughts, but in this case I went to bed a little hungry and thinking about losing weight and getting in good summer shape… so somehow my brain combined those two things and all I could think when I woke up was

Floyd Mayweather is FAT!

Now, if you have ever seen Floyd Mayweather, you know he is definitely NOT fat. He has fought in several weight categories and is always a lean, mean, fighting machine.

The odd thought was just WHY Floyd is LIKE “fat.”

  • Fat is easy to put on
  • Fat is fun to build up in a weird, sadistic kind of way
  • You have to put in a lot of work to stay even with fat
  • You can’t take it easy on fat and expect to go the distance
  • You want to hate fat and you do, but it still keeps showing up and you keep paying money to see it go down
  • Fat is REALLY HARD to knock down
  • Fat is even harder to knock out
  • Fat seems to hit where it shouldn’t – ok, that was a low blow :)

The long awaited fat knockout, I mean fight, is in mere hours.

The life/fat knockout takes months, if not years of training and even when you win, you can’t stop training because the next challenger is already rising up.

Manny Pacquiao is like lean muscle

  • Muscle works hard
  • Muscle is smaller than fat
  • Muscle is much more fun to show off
  • You’re not embarrassed to show off your muscle
  • Muscle takes a long time to build up, but once you get some you always want to see more
  • Muscle is all about clean living and doing the right things

Now that my brain is all messed up, maybe I’ll go listen to some Justin Bieber who likes fat more than muscle… Just kidding, Justin is good friends with Floyd and is scheduled to be entering the venue with him… which is just one more reason to hope that muscle wins :)

50 Shades of Grey

February 12, 2015 by That Guy Leave a Comment

I think the vast majority of the 40-ish(and 30ish, 50ish, and ish-ish) female population recognized the title of this article and what it represents.

Most have probably read the Fifty Shades Trilogy. The movie is coming out on Valentine’s Day Weekend 2015.

Guys, you probably at least heard about it from your spouse or female friends or the commercials and mentions all over social media. If not, it is not too difficult to guess what the book is about and trust me, you want to read this article and plan ahead! Here’s a little hint:

Female Phenomenon

There have already been more than 100 million copies of the books sold and it basically lives on the best seller list and it is one of the best selling books of ALL TIME.

Large numbers like 100,000,000 lose their meaning in today’s numbers world so just for some perspective…

There are around 317 million people in the US. Around 160 million are female. Less 20 million or so young girls gives you roughly 140 million adults… And 100 million were sold. Hmmm.

While the book was sold worldwide, over 45,000,000 copies were purchased in the US. And based on what I saw, the books were frequently shared between friends so I think roughly 99.99999% of female adults in the US read the books.

Your wife didn’t read it? Ok, her and 4 other women in your state didn’t…

Or did she read it on the kindle or iPad or put another cover on the hardback so you and everyone else wouldn’t know?

If she made you paint a room red in your house or bought you some Grey Ties or bought a new Audi recently… she read it.

The movie trailer has been viewed millions of times!!! Between all the trailers that will come out they probably paid for the movie already with YouTube traffic. Worth a quick watch if you want to know what the movie is about – wink, wink.

Laters Baby

With a well timed February 2015 release, I suspect that this Valentine’s Day will be great for all 40-ish men looking for romance and a little change of pace.

But plan ahead because all grey ties, red paint, and some other uhh, toys, will be sold out well before the time most guys start looking for gifts.

Trust us, this will be worth it to plan ahead! Didn’t make it in time? No worries, the specialty shops and online stores have recognized the phenomenon and have been anticipating the buying spree.

Why should you make plans? The 40-ish women are sure to be a little more excited than usual after watching this movie on the big screen! They will have Girl’s night out and you will probably have more than a few choose to go see this movie than you expect even if they don’t tell you.

Christian Grey aka Jamie Dornan

Fifty Shades of Grey imageWhile Jamie is only a 30-ish male, he certainly has the attention of all 30-ish, 40-ish, and 50-ish women in America.

Quite a jump from Calvin Klein to the big screen in what will be one of the landmark movies of this generation!

Not that it will be any good, who knows, but landmark in that it will explore some topics fairly taboo in most areas of the country as well as how Ana turns out growing in character throughout the series to the point she drives some of the action…

He is quoted as saying he doesn’t like his body/physique because he grew up skinny. Looks like he has worked hard and developed over the years and now he is reaping the rewards.

This is just another example of how leading a fit life can open doors that would otherwise have been shut.

For everyone wondering how he got this role instead of some of the more famous actors I think you can safely say they were looking for a 30-ish who looked the part and there just aren’t that many actors out there who can pull it off.

It also goes to show you how tough it is to maintain that healthy and fit lifestyle as you approach 40-ish because from what has been rumored there weren’t many actors over 35 considered. I’m sure if there was a ripped up 40-ish he would have been at least considered… or maybe I’m just delusional.

Anyway, a prime example of people letting go is our friend Leonardo DiCaprio letting it go as he moved from 30-ish to 40-ish in November 2014. Love his movies, but I think I know why his phone didn’t ring for this role!  Rihanna may have a little influence now since she isn’t about dating fat guys… A great example of why you should stay fit forever… you never know what doors will open personally or professionally by maintaining a healthy and fit lifestyle.

The 50 Shades movie cast

Anastasia Steele – Dakota Johnson
Christian Grey – Jamie Dornan
Elliot Grey – Luke Grimes
Kate Kavanagh – Eloise Mumford
Carla May Wilks – Jennifer Ehle

Building muscle builds better brains?

September 23, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

Great news for people who like to work out and exercise.

Several recent studies have shown that people “who had high levels of physical activity had fewer problems with memory and thinking skills, while a 2013 study claimed exercise is beneficial for the cognitive functioning of dementia patients.

The researchers say that such outcomes may be a result of improved structural activity within the white matter of the brain”

Big, better brains

But there is an additional factor that you really need to know especially for most of us who have a desk job or are cube dwellers…

Zombies will love eating your big brains

Ok, so maybe zombies won’t get you because you are too fast and with your exercise building up your brain you’ll be too smart to get caught… but what if you forget to run or forget to set that lock or zombie alarm?

The study did show that working out helped your brain, but being sedentary, ie cube dwelling, may counteract that benefit.

The study revealed that people who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical had fewer white matter lesions than those who engaged in low-level physical exercise.  They also had greater structural activity in the white matter of the temporal lobes, which plan an important part in memory, language, sight and hearing  Credits: Sedentary behavior ‘may counteract brain benefits of exercise in older adults’

None of the 40-ish people I know, including me, want to get eaten by zombies any more than we want to [Read more…]

6 Pack Abs update after Days 15 to 18

September 13, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

A quick update here on the blog for the 6 Pack Abs Challenge series we have on Joe’s journey to get 6 pack abs.

I rolled into day 15 with renewed focus and plans and did pretty well. Didn’t make much progress, but I am trying to dial this in for the long term! Short term goals are important so that is why I am breaking the challenge down like this, but I have to keep the goal in mind or I will get too frustrated.

I mentioned I might try to reach out to some of my online, Twitter, and bodybuilding/fitness friends to get some tips and I did exactly that. I am spending my spare time evaluating what they suggested and the plans I’ve seen so I will make that choice very fast and start incorporating their suggestions.

Six Pack Abs Challenge Days 15 to 18Back to even with the plan which is good, but I am in danger of crossing the line to the dark side. Can’t let that happen!

This update is for several days, but it is short so if you are looking for more motivation and stuff from Twitter check out the stuff I did for day 14 on FighterDiet.com –  Day 14 is here.

You can still find all of the first 30 days (currently in progress) and you can find the 2-pack goal for this period here along with links to details for each day.

A quick update here on the blog for the 6 Pack Abs Challenge series we have on Joe’s journey to get 6 pack abs.

I rolled into day 14 with additional motivation and did very well. Didn’t quite get the fast results I wanted, but stayed about the same so I stopped the bleeding!

I mentioned I might try to reach out to some of my online, Twitter, and bodybuilding/fitness friends to get some tips and I am trying to do that because it is obvious I need to be more focused.

Still below my plan weight, but my concerns are still very active and present given I held pretty much steady today. Need to adjust quickly, but still trust the process!

This update is for one day and has more motivation and stuff from Twitter and FighterDiet.com – Check Day 14 out here.

You can still find all of the first 30 days (currently in progress) and you can find the 2-pack goal for this period here along with links to details for each day.
