Building muscle builds better brains?

September 23, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

Great news for people who like to work out and exercise.

Several recent studies have shown that people “who had high levels of physical activity had fewer problems with memory and thinking skills, while a 2013 study claimed exercise is beneficial for the cognitive functioning of dementia patients.

The researchers say that such outcomes may be a result of improved structural activity within the white matter of the brain”

Big, better brains

But there is an additional factor that you really need to know especially for most of us who have a desk job or are cube dwellers…

Zombies will love eating your big brains

Ok, so maybe zombies won’t get you because you are too fast and with your exercise building up your brain you’ll be too smart to get caught… but what if you forget to run or forget to set that lock or zombie alarm?

The study did show that working out helped your brain, but being sedentary, ie cube dwelling, may counteract that benefit.

The study revealed that people who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical had fewer white matter lesions than those who engaged in low-level physical exercise.  They also had greater structural activity in the white matter of the temporal lobes, which plan an important part in memory, language, sight and hearing  Credits: Sedentary behavior ‘may counteract brain benefits of exercise in older adults’

None of the 40-ish people I know, including me, want to get eaten by zombies any more than we want to hear about dementia and reduced memory or cognitive skills as we age, but unfortunately many of us have seen our parents or family members go through that and many were only a decade or two removed from being 40-ish.  Do you remember when you were 20-ish how old 40 sounded? 50? 60? Sounded ancient right? Now, not so much.

The study didn’t say how to resolve this problem and avoid being eaten by zombies, but I think that is pretty simple – stay active during the day and every chance you get.

  • Play with your kids
  • Walk during lunch
  • Take the long way to your car
  • Use your cell for conference calls and walk the hallways because most of them are a waste of time anyway so you may as well benefit from it and avoid becoming a corporate brainless zombie at the same time you’re preparing against the zombie apocalypse.

Whether it happens or not, you’ll be prepared. And you’ll have a big, healthy brain to boot!

Do you have any tips to get in some extra exercise and help us all avoid being eaten by zombies? Comment below please and help a brother out :)
