Goals – World Cup Soccer edition

June 20, 2014 by That Guy Leave a Comment

One word comes to mind this time of year…

GOAL!!!!

That’s right! It’s World Cup Soccer time! Or should that be Futbol? I’m going with Soccer :)

ESPN’s ratings drop significantly this time of year in the South and if they would just say “up next in Futbol…” more American Football guys would stick around… Lots of reasons for the traditional drop:

  • Football, the American version, is still over two months away.
  • The Spurs took the title from the Heat
  • The Kings dominated the Rangers
  • The US Open (golf) is over
  • MLB is just boring to watch on TV
  • The World Cup is the best thing going….seriously!

Whatever your sport of choice, the World Cup draws more fans each year. And soccer continues to become more popular throughout the US. With soccer in mind, let’s talk about… GOALS!

Goal Setting

Like any project, break down any goal whether it is weight loss or getting lean into small bite sized pieces (no pun intended):

  1. Maintain a record…Get a notepad, chart or Excel spreadsheet and take a 21 day snapshot.
  2. Break it down…Set a target weight loss goal per day
  3. Don’t walk alone… Get an accountability partner who will join the journey with their own specific goal
  4. Weigh in daily…which will keep you focused.

Why do all this?

Writing down goals is proven effective.

A daily target keeps your mind on the goal.

A partner always adds pressure, especially if you put some wager on the line.

Our last wager involved the loser paying the entry fee to the Tough Mudder. Very motivating to put a couple hundred bucks on the line… and your pride.

Weighing in daily will keep you very focused, especially at night when bad decisions usually take place. If you know you are weighing in the morning, I suspect you will think twice before eating that giant bowl of ice cream.

I know I have a week at the beach in 28 days with a decision to make. Will I be “That Guy” or just the “Average Joe”. Yes, Joe, I am calling you out… What’s it going to be?
