Sound The Alarm!

May 15, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

For the second time in the past few months, I’ve shared a row on a commercial flight with a person so overweight that they had to “ring the bell” to ask the flight attendant for a seat belt extender.

For most, that would be motivation enough to make some life changes. To quote a a 30-ish female I overheard on the next aisle seat… “the alarm would be ringing!” and I would agree that it is time to be alarmed about 40-ish fitness and especially weight loss and maintenance.

Aging and Obesity

Based on this study, over 1/3 of U.S. adults are obese! 1 out of 3! And worse than that for us 40-ish guys and girls the number is a staggering 4 out [Read more…]

Dr. Feelgood and the Motley Crue

April 21, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

Dr. Feelgood

When you’re 40-ish and are old enough that you grew up listening to Motley Crue, there is a pretty good chance you are now listening to a different Dr. Feelgood.

That song came out in 1989 if you can believe that. Here it is for your nostalgia or education – I’m sure you’ve at least heard it before…

Dr. Feelgood at 40ish

Usually when I go to the Dr., I hate it – not for reasons you might think…

I just hate sitting in an office where I know most people are [Read more…]

Getting Dirty and Fit

April 19, 2014 by That Guy Leave a Comment

You know you’re dirty minded… and fitness minded… admit it! :)

Everybody wants to get dirty and call it fitness!

In years past most of the 30 to 40-ish population were 5k weekend warriors. To satisfy the increasing number of people who wanted to participate there were 5k’s popping up everywhere. Schools, clubs, memorials, fundraisers, teams and more got in on the trend and you can run any number of 5k’s ANY Saturday you want.

Tough Mudder woman racingMore recently there have been little tweaks to the normal 5k and races to get people excited about participating and to separate one 5k from another. Very successful. Especially one type of race has set itself apart – who knows why… The fitness marketing gurus identified a potential for revenue in the market and we’ve all seen this trend explode in a few years…

Dirty Minded Fitness Freaks

I’m referring about Dirty Events!

Recipe for making ‘dirty’ money:

  1. Determine your desired level of fitness event
  2. Add friends, work groups, families…
  3. Sprinkle in some method of getting dirty (color, mud, foam)
  4. Add a bunch of photos that can be posted on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter
  5. Charge $50-$100 to enter

Voila! A ‘new’, ‘fun’, ‘different’ way to do a 5k or half marathon… but it is more than that because now you pull in not only the cardio freaks, but the muscle heads and divergents like CrossFit and Extreme type people. This recipe has proven to be a [Read more…]

Toxic Relationships

April 18, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

Which came first… the chicken or the egg?

Which came first… being obese or having negative relationships in your life?

I recently read an article in Mens Health, which was also picked up by Fox News discussing how poor social connections are related to obesity. It made me wonder…

How many obese people are truly happy? Are Fat People Really Happy Sure we always see pictures of Jolly Old St. Nick and seem to think that fat people are happy.

The Big, Fat Lie

Far from the truth.

I would venture to speculate that there are very few obese people in this world that are happy with their current body fat percentage and [Read more…]

Divergent

April 14, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe 2 Comments

What does the first in a series of books about virtues in a dystopian society have to do with being 40ish and working out?  A lot more than I expected.

I haven’t read The Divergent Book Series yet, but my daughters loved them and wanted to see the movie.

As with most of their public appearances now, I am not invited. Plus I didn’t want to see some teenage girl movie so I dropped them off and I went to Wings to watch some basketball and make other bad choices :)

When I picked them up, they kept raving about how good the books were, how good the movie was, how the movie was different from the book, and how much I would like the movie.  Hmmm.  They know me pretty well so I guess I’ll have to go see it.

After checking out some of the reviews, Veronica’s blog, and some YouTube previews… I am in.

But after finding out more about the story, all I am thinking about is how this relates to real life… especially the lives of people who exercise in some form or fashion.

Virtues of an “Exerciser”

There are five basic virtues [Read more…]

Six Pack Abs with Not So Average Joe

March 19, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe 1 Comment

aka – Six Pack abs and the 80-20 rule

The COLD Six Pack

Six pack abs guy - beers covering his one pack absEveryone wants a six pack. Most 40-ish guys just want it to be cold and in a convenient carrying case. The ones who want it to be ON their belly instead of IN their belly have a little more work to do than just swinging by the corner store on the way home.

This is the beginning of my quest for the mythical six pack abs.

That Guy has them most of the time and can dial them in if needed for beach trips or a weekend on the lake or at the neighborhood pool/cookout.

The HOT Six Pack

Six Pack Abs is the goal - losing weight is the keyMost of you have heard the phrase “washboard abs” and I’m not quite 40-ish-plus enough to have used or seen a washboard in action, but I can tell you everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, appreciates a hot 6 pack – whether it is on a man or woman. Sexy. Hot.

Also, EVERYONE wants [Read more…]

300: Rise of an Empire

March 10, 2014 by NotSoAverage Joe Leave a Comment

300 + ripped up warriors

Years ago when the first 300 movie came out there were some pretty good workout routines that showed up online that these guys did to get into that kind of shape.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, look at the links for some of those dudes. Not only did they have some excellent muscle, there were also shredded. Lean.

300 and 40ish cardio

Now, like a lot of other guys in [Read more…]
